Brand To Watch: Studio Cut

The new uniform

Boyish utility meets modern whimsy. The result? Downtown cool for indecisive minds (or those who like having it all).

When I’m not busy being enamored by puffy sleeves and floral frocks best suited for community theater plays, I’m drawn to the masculine aesthetic of strong shoulders, sharp tailoring, and boyish silhouettes that hang loose. The “middle ground” generally tends to elude me, so alternating between wild florals and utilitarian neutrals is the closest thing I have to a uniform.

Studio Cut, launched in 2018 and based in Portugal, leans more to the utilitarian side, with a dash of loose and languid femininity (see: dresses that could swallow you whole). In a short time, the brand has already become a favorite of IG personalities like Pernille Teisbaek, Jen Wonders, and Angela Fink. The first two styles to draw my eye were, on separate occasions, a sharp-collared button-down shirt and a pair of long, high-waisted trousers (both discovered at LES favorite Frankie Shop).

A quick Google search showed little on the brand at the time, but a glance at their Instagram proved I hadn’t just stumbled upon another menswear-inspired workwear brand. My heart leapt upon spying an oversized taffeta dress with a large peplum hem, then another dress that looked like a white jacquard nightgown with a ruffled, high neck and billowy sleeves. In short, I realized Studio Cut mixed the best of both my worlds: straightforward and fanciful.

It’s only been a few months since that Google search, but you can now find the brand’s SS20 trunkshow on Moda Operandi. One glance at the selection that includes tailored bermuda shorts, a voluminous lace organza faux-wrap top, and a variety of long blazers will tell you this brand is going to get bigger. Its pieces appear very wearable and comfortable while still being somewhat clever. The best part? The pricepoint isn’t nauseating(!!!)
